Week Eight Wrap-Up
With an overall percentage of .542, this week wasn’t great, but it was sure better than last week. At least we were above .500 as a group, if not all of us individually. Seriously dragging the group down were Geoff Baggett, Joe Kennedy, and myself, who combined for a stunning 17-25 record on the week. [...]
As God Intended
And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds-livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth acording to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the [...]
What Not to Say
I compiled the following list from several sources over the years. They are all supposedly things people have actually put on their resumes:
“My intensity and focus are at inordinately high levels, and my ability to complete projects on time is unspeakable.”
“Education: Curses in liberal arts, curses in computer science, curses in accounting.”
“Instrumental in ruining entire [...]
Tent Width
Note: There are several statements in this post that assert what Wade Burleson believes. I have emailed these statements to Wade, and he has offered clarification. In all but one instance, I have changed them to reflect his wording. The one I did not change, I have italicized and marked with an asterisk, and Wade’s [...]
Lost Church Members
Peter Beck, pastor of Kenwood Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and a Ph.D. student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has written an excellent First Person column for Baptist Press that contains some of the strongest language I have yet seen in print regarding the problem of non-attending church “members.” Here is a sample:
We need [...]
Week Seven Wrap-Up
Well, this is where I would normally tell you who the winner for the week was, but with a combined .474 percentage in week seven, there are no winners. This was by far our ugliest week to date. Even though I picked the Giants, I was actually hoping the Cowboys would rally last night, just [...]
Time Flies
When I posted my account of my trip to Southwestern Seminary this past Tuesday, I promised that I would soon share my thoughts on the issues surrounding that meeting, as I believe they have great importance to the larger SBC conversations that are ongoing. It seems, however, that I have barely sat down since writing [...]
An Invitation
I have read in comments and on blogs an accusation that Baptist Press is nothing more than a public-relations machine beholden to the “powers-that-be” within our convention.
I would like to invite those who believe that this is the case to explain the existence of this story, which appears to me to be a very fair [...]
Late to the Dance
I’m not one who makes a habit of being late, but I was late yesterday. According to Microsoft’s Streets & Trips, I live precisely 205 miles from Southwestern Seminary. I enjoyed a brief conversation with Ben Cole yesterday afternoon, during which he asked me if I flew in for the meeting. I told him it [...]
